History

Oak Forest was originally developed in the 1950s as a post-war residential community, built to meet the demand for affordable housing near Houston's growing employment centers. The neighborhood was designed with wide lots and tree-lined streets — many of the original post-war ranch homes still stand today alongside newer construction. For decades, Oak Forest flew under the radar compared to flashier Inner Loop neighborhoods, but its combination of large lots, central location, and reasonable prices has made it one of Houston's hottest real estate markets in recent years.

Oak Forest is more suburban in feel, with most errands requiring a car. However, the neighborhood's proximity to Highway 249 and the 610 Loop makes it easy to reach Heights, Downtown, and the Galleria.
